Asbestos Testing
We arrange lab sample testing on pre-1986 ceilings before any scraping, so you know what you're dealing with.

The median Cheyenne home was built in 1976, and roughly 54% of the city's housing went up between 1950 and 1989. That is exactly the window when sprayed "acoustic" popcorn texture was the default ceiling finish. If you live in a ranch in Sun Valley, a split-level in Western Hills or an older home near downtown, there's a good chance you're looking up at it right now.
Popcorn texture collects dust and cobwebs, it's hard to patch after a roof leak, and it makes rooms look dated. Removing it is one of the most noticeable upgrades you can make to an older home, whether you plan to stay or sell.
Cheyenne Popcorn Removal does one job: ceilings. We remove the texture, deal with what's underneath, and leave you with a smooth, paint-ready or fully painted surface. Every project starts with a free written quote and, on older homes, a plan for asbestos testing before anything gets scraped.
Popcorn removal is the core of what we do. These are the services that go with it.

Floors and walls are covered in plastic, the texture is wetted and scraped, and the debris is bagged and hauled away.
Skim coat, sand, prime and paint, depending on your package. We clean up and walk the rooms with you at the end.
We publish our ranges because most local contractors don't.
| Package | What it includes | Typical range per sq ft |
|---|---|---|
| Scrape & prep | Removal, sanding, ready for your painter | $1.50–$2.75 |
| Smooth & primed | Scrape + skim coat + prime (smooth, paint-ready) | $3.00–$4.75 |
| Turnkey | Scrape + skim + prime + paint | $3.75–$5.75 |
| New texture | Scrape + new knockdown or orange-peel texture | $3.00–$4.75 |
These are typical ranges per square foot of ceiling, not a quote. Previously painted popcorn adds about 25%, ceilings over 9 feet about 15% and vaulted or cathedral ceilings about 30%. Asbestos lab sample testing starts at about $250, and very small single-room jobs may have a minimum charge. A 12×12 bedroom (144 sq ft) taken to a smooth, primed finish typically runs about $430–$685.
No hype, just the way we work.
Popcorn texture installed before about 1980 may contain asbestos, and older material was still used after the federal ban on spray-applied ceiling texture in 1978. Wyoming DEQ does not require homeowners to have private homes inspected, but it strongly recommends that a trained Asbestos Building Inspector test suspect materials before they're disturbed. We agree. On pre-1986 ceilings we arrange sample testing through an accredited lab or inspector before scraping. If a sample is positive, the removal goes to a properly trained asbestos abatement contractor.

We're a new local business, so we don't have reviews to show yet. We'd rather earn them than invent them. After your job, we'll ask you to leave an honest Google review.
Typical ranges run $1.50–$2.75 per square foot of ceiling for scrape and prep, $3.00–$4.75 for a smooth skim-coated and primed finish, and $3.75–$5.75 for turnkey work including paint. Painted texture, ceilings over 9 feet and vaulted rooms cost more. These are estimates; your written quote is based on your actual rooms.
You can't tell by looking. Spray-on ceiling texture installed before about 1980 may contain asbestos, and older stock was used after the 1978 ban. On pre-1986 ceilings we arrange sample testing through an accredited lab or inspector before any scraping. If a sample comes back positive, the work goes to a trained asbestos abatement contractor.
A single bedroom is often scraped and skim coated in a day or two, with priming and paint after that. A whole 1,200 square foot ranch usually takes several working days. Cheyenne's dry air helps joint compound set quickly, but each skim pass still needs to dry before sanding. Your quote includes a realistic schedule.
Usually not. We work room by room, cover floors and walls with plastic, and seal doorways so dust stays in the work area. Most families keep living in the home and simply avoid the rooms being worked on. Plan to clear small items and furniture you can move; we cover and work around the rest.
Yes. Painted popcorn is harder because the paint keeps water from soaking in, so the texture doesn't release as easily. It takes more time and sometimes a different approach, which is why painted ceilings carry a typical 25% adjustment over the base price. Tell us if your ceiling was painted when you request a quote.
It depends on the project and where you live. Inside city limits, the City of Cheyenne Building Permits Division sets the rules; in unincorporated areas like the Ranchettes or South Greeley, Laramie County Planning & Development does. We'll confirm whether your project needs a permit before work is scheduled.
