The problem: ceilings are the hardest surface to paint well
Ceilings get looked at in raking light, they are awkward to reach, and every mistake shows. Roller lap marks, uneven sheen, blotchy spots over new mud and stains bleeding through are the usual results of a rushed ceiling paint job.
After popcorn removal there is an extra wrinkle. The new joint compound is porous, and paint applied directly over it can flash, drying in patches of different sheen. Old water stains are another trap, because they come right back through ordinary paint.
The solution: the right primer and the right paint
- Flat ceiling white. Flat paint hides surface variation and spreads light evenly. It is the standard for good reason.
- Primer over new mud. Every skim-coated or patched area gets a drywall primer so finish coats dry to a uniform look.
- Stain-blocking primer for water stains. Stains are spot-primed with a stain blocker before paint, so they stay hidden.
- Clean edges. Cut lines at the wall are kept straight, and walls are protected while we work.
Ceiling painting pairs naturally with a smooth ceiling finish or a new knockdown texture, and it is the last step in our turnkey package.
Our process
Protect the room
Floors, furniture and walls are covered. Light fixtures and smoke detectors are removed or masked.
Check and repair
Cracks, nail pops and dents are filled and sanded. Larger damage is handled by our ceiling repair service first.
Prime
New mud gets drywall primer; water stains get a stain-blocking primer.
Cut in and roll
Edges are cut in, then the ceiling is rolled in consistent, overlapping passes to avoid lap marks. Cheyenne's dry air shortens the time paint stays wet, so we keep a wet edge and work one ceiling plane at a time.
Second coat and inspection
A second coat goes on once the first is dry, then the ceiling is checked under a work light.
Clean up
Coverings come down, fixtures go back up and the room is left tidy.
Painting after popcorn removal
If we are already removing your popcorn, adding paint is usually the simplest path. The room is contained once, the primer is already on, and you get it back finished instead of waiting on a separate painter.
We also repaint ceilings that never had popcorn, or that were already smoothed, when they have yellowed from age, cooking or a wood stove. The same rules apply: repair first, spot-prime anything stained, then two even coats of flat ceiling white. Bathrooms and kitchens may get a paint with a little more moisture and scrub resistance; we will note that in your quote.
If you prefer to paint it yourself or use your own painter, our scrape-and-skim package leaves the ceiling primed and paint-ready.

Pricing
Turnkey scrape, skim, prime and paint typically runs $3.75 to $5.75 per sq ft of ceiling. A 1,200 sq ft ranch done turnkey is roughly $4,500 to $6,900. Painted popcorn, tall ceilings and vaulted ceilings add to the total. These are estimates; see our popcorn ceiling removal cost guide for the full table.

Frequently asked questions
What paint do you use on ceilings?
Usually a flat ceiling white. Flat paint has almost no sheen, so it does not reflect light in a way that highlights seams, patches or roller marks. Ceiling-specific paints also spatter less overhead. If you want a tinted ceiling or a different sheen, for example in a bathroom, we will talk through the options when we quote.
Do I need primer before painting a new skim coat?
Yes. Fresh joint compound is very porous and soaks up paint unevenly, which can leave a blotchy finish called flashing. A drywall primer seals the compound so the finish coats go on evenly. Skipping primer usually means more coats of paint and a less consistent result, so it is not a real savings.
Will paint cover a water stain on my ceiling?
Not on its own. Water stains bleed through regular latex paint, sometimes within days. We spot-prime stains with a stain-blocking primer first, then paint. Before that, the source of the leak needs to be fixed, otherwise the stain comes back. If the drywall is soft or sagging, it needs repair before painting.
Can you paint a popcorn ceiling instead of removing it?
It can be done, but we usually advise against it. Paint makes popcorn harder to remove later, adding about 25% to future removal cost, and rolling can pull texture loose. On older homes, any texture should be tested before it is disturbed. Most homeowners get better value from removing it now.
How much does ceiling painting cost?
Paint is most cost-effective as part of a turnkey project: scrape, skim, prime and paint typically runs $3.75 to $5.75 per sq ft of ceiling, compared with $3.00 to $4.75 without paint. Standalone repaints are quoted per room. All figures are estimates; your written quote lists exact pricing.
