The problem: a scraped ceiling is not a finished ceiling

Getting the popcorn down is only half the job. Underneath you usually find taped seams that were never feathered out, screw pops, gouges from the scraper and bits of texture that would not let go. The original builder had no reason to finish the drywall well, because the texture was going to cover it.

Paint that surface as-is and the flaws show the first sunny morning. Cheyenne has plenty of those, and low winter sun through a south window will rake across the ceiling and light up every ridge.

That is why most homeowners who remove popcorn choose a skim-coated smooth finish instead of paint alone.

The solution: skim coat to a Level 5 finish

A skim coat is a thin layer of joint compound troweled over the entire ceiling, not just the seams. Two or more passes fill the low spots, bury the old tape lines and give the drywall one uniform surface. In drywall terms, that is a Level 5 finish, the standard for surfaces that will be seen under strong or angled light.

  • Hides seams, patches and scraper marks
  • Gives paint an even surface so the sheen looks consistent
  • Makes the room feel brighter and more current
  • Easy to repaint and touch up later

Not every ceiling needs to be perfectly smooth. If the drywall underneath is badly out of plane, a knockdown or orange-peel texture may be the better call, and we will tell you if we think so.

Our process

  1. Test if needed

On homes with texture installed before 1986, we arrange asbestos sample testing before any scraping.

  2. Contain the room

Floors and walls are covered in plastic, vents are sealed and furniture is moved or wrapped. Dust stays inside the work area.

  3. Scrape and repair

The texture is wetted and scraped, loose tape is reset, screw pops are fixed and damaged spots are patched.

  4. Skim in thin passes

We trowel thin, even coats across the whole ceiling. Thin passes matter in Cheyenne's dry air, where thick mud can skin over and crack.

  5. Sand and inspect

Each coat is sanded and checked with a work light held at a low angle to find anything the eye would miss.

  6. Prime and clean up

A drywall primer seals the new compound. Then the plastic comes down, debris is hauled off and the room is vacuumed.

Notes on drying in a high, dry climate

At 6,086 feet with low humidity, joint compound in Cheyenne sets and dries faster than it does in most of the country. That has an upside: coats are often ready for the next pass the same day, so schedules move quickly. The downside is less working time on each pass.

We handle it by mixing compound to the right consistency, working in sections a crew can finish while the edges are still wet, and keeping the furnace from blowing hot dry air straight at fresh mud in winter. More on this in our article about ceiling work in Cheyenne's dry climate.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Level 5 ceiling finish?

Level 5 is the highest drywall finish level. The whole surface gets a thin skim coat of joint compound so it has a uniform texture and porosity. That matters on ceilings because light from windows hits them at a low angle and shows every seam and patch. Level 5 is what makes a ceiling look truly smooth after paint.

Why can't you just paint after scraping the popcorn off?

Scraping leaves gouges, old tape seams, screw heads and patches of leftover texture. Under paint, those show up as ridges and shadows, especially in rooms with big windows. A skim coat fills the low spots and evens out the surface so the paint lays down flat. Skipping it usually looks fine at night and rough in daylight.

Does Cheyenne's dry climate affect skim coating?

Yes. Cheyenne gets about 15.9 inches of precipitation a year and humidity is usually low, so joint compound sets and dries quickly. That is good for schedules but leaves less working time. We apply thin passes, work in manageable sections, and keep edges wet so we avoid lap marks and cracking from mud that dries too fast.

How long does a smooth ceiling finish take?

A single bedroom is often scraped, skimmed and primed in two to three days. A whole house usually takes about a week, depending on square footage, ceiling height and how many skim passes the surface needs. The dry air here helps coats dry between passes. How much does a smooth ceiling cost compared with scraping only?

Scrape and prep typically runs $1.50 to $2.75 per sq ft. Scrape, skim coat and prime typically runs $3.00 to $4.75 per sq ft, and turnkey with paint runs $3.75 to $5.75. These are estimates; painted texture, tall ceilings and vaulted ceilings add to the price.
