Why older popcorn ceilings need a test first
Spray-on "popcorn" ceiling texture was popular for decades because it was cheap and hid flaws. Some of it contained asbestos. The federal government banned spray-applied asbestos ceiling texture in 1978, but existing stock kept going onto ceilings for years after. That is why we treat any popcorn texture installed before 1986 as suspect until a lab says otherwise.
Cheyenne has a lot of homes in that window. The median home here was built in 1976, and about 54% of the housing stock dates from 1950 through 1989. If your house falls in that range, there is a real chance the original texture is still overhead.
You cannot tell by looking. Asbestos fibers are microscopic, and texture with and without asbestos looks the same. The only way to know is to send a sample to a lab.
What Wyoming DEQ says about home ceilings
The Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality, Air Quality Division, sets the state asbestos rules. Here is what matters for a homeowner in Laramie County:
- Homeowners are not required to get an asbestos inspection in a private residence. DEQ defines a regulated "facility" to exclude residential buildings with four or fewer dwelling units.
- The rules still apply if a home is being converted to commercial or public use.
- Disposal rules still apply. Asbestos waste has to be handled and disposed of properly, even from a single-family home.
- DEQ strongly recommends that a trained Asbestos Building Inspector test suspect materials before anyone disturbs them.
Our approach: on pre-1986 ceilings we arrange sample testing through an accredited lab or inspector before any scraping. We do not perform asbestos abatement ourselves. This is general information, not legal or medical advice; DEQ is the authority on the rules.

How sampling works
Testing is quick and keeps the mess to a minimum.
Request a quote
Tell us the age of the home and which rooms you want done. If the texture likely predates 1986, testing goes on the plan.
Samples are taken
Small samples are collected from the ceiling, usually one per area where the texture looks different. The spots are misted, cut out, sealed in labeled bags and patched.
Lab analysis
The samples go to an accredited lab. Turnaround is typically a few business days.
Results and next step
Negative results mean we schedule your removal. Positive results mean the scraping is referred to a trained asbestos abatement contractor.
If the results come back positive
A positive result is not the end of the project. It changes who does the removal. We refer the scraping to a properly trained asbestos abatement contractor, who handles containment, removal and disposal under the applicable rules. Wyoming has no separate contractor licensing program for asbestos, but anyone running a regulated asbestos project must carry a current AHERA training certificate on site.
After abatement, the bare ceiling still needs finishing. That is where we come back in: a smooth skim-coated finish, a new knockdown or orange-peel texture, and ceiling painting to wrap it up.
If results are negative, we move straight to dust-controlled removal with full plastic containment and cleanup.

What testing costs
Lab sample testing runs from about $250. A full asbestos inspector visit, for homes where several materials or many rooms need checking, typically runs $250 to $850. Both are estimates; your written quote lists the exact line item.
Testing is a small share of a typical project. A 12×12 bedroom taken smooth and primed is roughly $430 to $685, and a 1,200 sq ft ranch done turnkey is roughly $4,500 to $6,900. See the full breakdown on our popcorn ceiling removal cost page.

Frequently asked questions
Does Wyoming require an asbestos test before I remove my popcorn ceiling?
Not for most homes. Wyoming DEQ asbestos rules exclude residential buildings with four or fewer dwelling units, so homeowners are not required to get an inspection. DEQ still strongly recommends having a trained Asbestos Building Inspector test suspect materials first, and its disposal rules for asbestos waste still apply. We test pre-1986 ceilings before scraping as standard practice.
How long do asbestos test results take?
Lab turnaround is typically a few business days after the sample reaches the lab. Rush options are sometimes available at an added cost. We schedule your removal once results come back, so the test rarely holds up a project by much. If your timeline is tight, mention it when you request a quote and we will plan around it.
How much does popcorn ceiling asbestos testing cost?
Lab sample testing starts from about $250. A full visit from an asbestos inspector, which can cover more materials or more rooms, typically runs $250 to $850. These are estimates; the final price depends on how many samples are needed. We include the testing line item in your written quote so there are no surprises.
What happens if my ceiling tests positive for asbestos?
We do not scrape it. The work goes to a properly trained asbestos abatement contractor, and we can point you toward one. Once the abatement work is done and the area is cleared, we can come back for the finish work: skim coating, priming, texture or painting, so you still end up with the ceiling you wanted.
Can I just take a sample myself?
Some homeowners do, but disturbing the texture is the thing you are trying to avoid, and a poorly taken sample can give a misleading result. DEQ recommends a trained inspector. Sampling through an accredited lab or inspector also gives you documentation you can keep with the house, which is useful when you sell.
